New Eye Care Technology-Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)

Calgary Optometry Centre is excited to announce Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) technology to all of our offices. Similar to when we acquired Optomap imaging, OCT imaging will raise the level of patient care in terms of diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of many eye conditions.

What is OCT?

OCT is essentially an optical ultrasound, but instead of using sound waves, infrared light is used to image eye structures in great detail and in three dimensions (3D). The infrared light is not harmful to eye tissues and measurements within the eye are measured in microns (1/1,000 of a millimeter). This allows very fine monitoring of eye conditions where there can be abnormal thinning or thickening of eye tissues.

Patient Experience

OCT imaging is non-invasive, non- contact technology, involving no special patient preparation. In most cases, dilating eye drops are not required. Again, the infrared light used is non-ionizing and there are no short or long term side effects.

Who needs OCT Imaging?

Initially, we are recommending that all patients 25 years old and over have baseline OCT imaging. Future imaging intervals will be determined by results of the baseline image, subsequent eye exam results, family history of eye disease and other age/gender eye risk factors. For example, risk for glaucoma is higher in patients over 55 years old, and/or have a glaucoma family history. These patients may have more frequent OCT imaging.

2. Earlier detection and diagnosis of eye disease conditions, leading to timely treatment to reduce any loss of vision.
3. Storing of images to allow future comparison to monitor any disease progression or to ensure disease stability.
