Sunglasses - Protecting your Eyes from Harm
Calgary Optometry Centre addresses eyewear issues, questions & news:
Most of us wear sunglasses to reduce the brightness effect from the sun or from reflecting surfaces such as snow. While almost any dark lens can reduce the brightness, not all sunglasses protect your eyes from harm.
It is generally well known that ultraviolet radiation from the sun is potentially harmful to our bodies. When it comes to the eyes, short term and long term effects from ultraviolet radiation have been identified.

The more time you spend in the sun without proper eye protection, the higher your chances for ultraviolet related eye problems.
Building the proper pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes
Here is a checklist for a complete sunglass that will provide the highest level of visual comfort and eye protection:
- Ultraviolet coating that will block out 99-100% of all ultraviolet radiation
- Dark lenses that block out 75% of visible light.
- Coloured lenses that do not distort colour perception
- Optically ground lenses so there are no optical distortions in vision
- Frame size large enough to prevent light and ultraviolet radiation from entering around the edges of the frame.
- Special filters to reduce glare or reflections.
Come in and ask our opticians about the best in sunglass protection for your eyes.
