Calgary Optometry Centre…Working Beyond Borders
Our vision is to improve the quality of life for our patients in Calgary and for those in developing countries. As part of this commitment, Dr. R. Bauder of Calgary Optometry Centre, in conjunction with Dr. C. Klettke of Eye Designs Optometry, organized an eye care mission to Dominica in May 2011. This mission involved a group of seventeen volunteers, including staff of Calgary Optometry Centre, who travelled to Dominica (See Map) for a week to provide a variety of humanitarian service. We were able to affect the lives of over three hundred Dominicans through eye examinations, and will be making glasses at our lab in Calgary to send to those in need.
Dominica is a lush island of rugged terrain with a rich history. Its limited access has created a strong community spirit and an enduringly friendly attitude among its citizens. Due to its volcanic landscape, it is not possible to sustain agricultural development and its limited industries have created economic disparity. It was a touching experience to help these hard-working people who have an optimistic perspective of life.
