Spare Glasses

Calgary Optometry Centre addresses eyewear issues, questions & news:

Trying Eyeglass Frames If you wear glasses, then in most cases, the glasses are on from the time your wake up to the time you go to bed. Your glasses bring the world to you and when they don't work properly, you can't work properly. Problems such as blurred vision, eyestrain, tired eyes and glare are just a few of the symptoms we hear from patients.

In many cases, these problems can be solved with a second pair of glasses with a specialized prescription. When your optometrist is able to talk with you about your lifestyle, occupational and recreational vision needs, a spare or task-specific pair of glasses may be the solution to make your life easier, more comfortable or more productive.

Here are several example of how a second pair of glasses can enhance your vision lifestyle:

1. Occupational Needs

A multitude of job situations call for specific working distances (such as computer screens and sewing) and specific viewing angles (such as auto repair and carpentry). Regular and bifocal glasses may not be focused for these distances as well forcing awkward head and neck positions.

2. Recreational and Hobby Needs

Just like occupational needs, various non-work activities involve specific viewing distances. Again, your regular or bifocal glasses may not provide comfortable vision. These include reading, painting, piano playing, sewing and woodwork.

3. Safety Needs

Any activity where there is the possibility of physical damage to the eye, safety eyewear should be considered. Proper safety lenses and frames offer greater impact resistance than regular lenses to provide maximum eye protection.

4. Preventative Needs

Any patient with a strong prescription should consider a second pair of glasses. Loss or breakage of the primary pair may affect function even for a short period and replacement of glasses may take longer than expected.

5. Sports Needs

Specific prescriptions, frames and tints are available to enhance vision and performance for activities such as fishing, golfing, tennis, shooting, swimming/scuba diving and billiards.

6. General Lifestyle Needs

Patients who travel often or who spend time at various locations (such as vacation homes), may benefit from a second pair of glasses.

Patients who meet and deal with the public (salespeople, doctors, lawyers, receptionists, etc.), may choose to change or enhance their professional appearance with a second pair of glasses
