Do It Yourself (DIY) Vision Tips

Follow these tips to maintain consistent and clear vision:

  • Periodically cover one eye then the other to compare the vision clarity in each eye. Blurred vision in one eye is quite common but often missed because both eyes are usually open at the same time. It there is a noticeable vision difference between the two eyes, make an appointment with your Optometrist.

  • Follow the 20-20-20 rule for computer work. For every 20 minutes looking at the screen, look away for 20 seconds to a distance of at least 20 feet. This will reduce long term eyestrain and fatigue from computer work.

  • Increase your Vitamin A intake to improve your night vision. The eyes contain a light sensitive chemical called rhodopsin which is used up as the day progresses. Vitamin A is needed so that rhodopsin can be replaced. Foods rich in vitamin A include carrots, broccoli, eggs, fish and milk products.

  • Inspect and clean the lenses in your glasses daily. Smudged, dirty, and scratched lenses create vision blur and glare which will create eyestrain and headaches. This is especially noticeable for night driving.

  • Adjust and balance your light levels appropriately when possible. Too little light causes increased eye fatigue as the eyes have to work harder to focus. Too much light can create glare leading to eye strain.
