Vision Correction Options
Calgary Optometry Centre answers common eye care questions:
PRK
This is a laser surgical procedure effective for correcting low and moderate degrees of nearsightedness and astigmatism. For this procedure, the surgeon scrape away the top layers of the cornea, then apply a focused beam of intense light energy to the corneal surface to re-shape the corneal tissue and improve the visual focus. It takes approximately one week for the top layers of the cornea to grow back.
Intralase Lasik
This is a laser surgical procedure effective for correcting mild to moderate degrees of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. For this procedure, the surgeon will create a corneal flap, then apply a focused beam of intense light energy to the corneal surface to re-shape the corneal tissue and improve the visual focus. The corneal flap is then flipped back over to act as a protective cap over the newly shaped cornea.
Implantable Corrective Lens (ICL)
This is a surgical procedure effective for correcting high degrees of nearsightedness, farsightedness with or without astigmatism. For this procedure, the surgeon inserts a man made, biocompatible prescription lens inside the eye to improve the visual focus.
Astigmatic Keratotomy and Limbal Relaxing Incisions
This is a surgical procedure effective for correcting mild to moderate degrees of astigmatism. For this procedure, the surgeon makes partial thickness incisions in the cornea, which make an irregularly shaped cornea more round to improve visual focus.
