Transitions Lenses…Right in any Light

Calgary Optometry Centre addresses eyewear issues, questions & news:
Transition Lenses
Transitions lenses are an ideal, all-around spectacle lens if you wear your glasses both indoors and outdoors. While the lenses are clear indoors, they begin to darken when exposed to ultra-violet light from the sun. This change happens so smoothly and quickly that your visual comfort is maintained as you change from one environment to the next. The lenses offer everyday convenience and flexibility for all your lifestyle needs.

Transitions lenses are not like your parents' photochromic lenses! Unlike your parents' lenses, Transitions lenses lighten and darken quickly and do not give that "sunglass" appearance when indoors. Most users report that this transition happens so quickly and smoothly, they are unaware to the colour change but enjoy the benefit of continuous visual comfort.

Transitions lenses provide healthy vision

Your eyes, like your skin need protection from the sun's harmful ultra-violet radiation. Research indicates that cumulative damage from ultra-violet A and B (UVA and UVB) radiation exposure may contribute to eye diseases such as cataracts and macular degeneration. Our doctors highly recommend that patients protect their eyes when exposed to bright sunlight for prolonged periods of time. Transitions lenses block out 100% of UVA and UVB without lifting a finger-no need for separate sunglass clips or a second pair of prescription sunglasses.

Transitions lenses provide more comfortable vision

Southern Alberta provides strong sunlight year round. As an alternative to separate sunglass clips or separate prescription sunglasses, Transitions lenses quickly and effectively reduce the sun's glare to your eyes to reduce symptoms of squinting and watery eyes. Additionally, the lenses will actually lighten and darken as the sun goes in and out of the clouds, again, allowing your eyes to have continuous visual comfort.

Who needs Transitions lenses?

Transition Lenses Specifically, these groups are ideal for Transitions lenses:

Children: Developing eyes are more susceptible to ultra-violet radiation and need more protection. In fact, 80% of ultra-violet radiation exposure to their eyes can happen before age 18, so the earlier protection starts, the better.

Active Adults: People who spend a lot of time outdoors need to appreciate protection from the bright, glaring sun. It's never too late to start protecting the eyes from the exposure to UVA and UVB radiation

Patients with special needs: Certain people are more susceptible to ultra-violet radiation effects such as people who have sensitive eyes, are diabetic or use certain medications that make you more sensitive to sunlight.

Transitions lenses are available in a wide range of lens designs including single vision, bifocals and progressive lenses. They are currently available in two different colours: grey and brown.
