Do It Yourself (DIY) Eye Health Tips
Follow these tips to help ensure lifelong healthy eyes:
- Eat healthy. Research has shown that nutrition is important to long term eye health. Anti-oxidant vitamins (vitamins A, C, E and beta-carotene), luteins and omega 3 can help prevent eye problems such as AMD and cataracts.
- Protect your eyes from the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation by wearing sunglasses with maximum UV protection. UV rays can cause cataract formation and macular degeneration. This is a cumulative effect, so children should also be wearing sunglasses. Don't forget sunglasses are for winter, too.
- Use appropriate safety glasses to protect the eyes when doing hazardous activities at home or at work especially when there is the possibility of chemical splashes or flying debris
- If you have been recently diagnosed with vascular conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol, make an appointment for an eye exam. These conditions can cause changes to eye health and affect your vision.
- Avoid rubbing your eyes in case unknown substances enter the eye.
- Avoid using Visine eye drops for red eyes-this will decrease the red eye but does not treat the cause. Red eye is usually a signal of eye distress. This can be as normal as eye fatigue to a serious sight threatening eye ulcer. If the redness does not go away within a day or if there are other signs like eye pain or discharge, make an appointment to see your Optometrist.
- Quit smoking. Smoking has been shown to increase the risk for macular degeneration which causes loss of central vision.
